Hi there, I am Suman Mishra from Madhubani in Mithila, a region famous for intricate Madhubani paintings and for growing Makhana (foxnuts). My wife, Nayanika Sengupta, comes from Kolkata— the city of joy, food heaven, and ex-capital of the British India. She was into classical Odissi, I was into literature and writing, but our roads crossed and we came together when we did our PhDs in Molecular Biophysics from the same laboratory at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. She speaks Bangla, I speak Maithili; to each other we speak in Hindi and with colleagues we talk in English. This has brought a lot of cultural tolerance and fresh perspectives into our married life. Today we are postdoctoral scientists in lush green Cambridge, thousands of miles away from our shared first home— Bangalore, living what we call the Indian dream— of a loving and peaceful household with a great work-life balance and lots of travelling.
